We’ve all been there. It’s late in the evening, you’ve had a long exhausting day! Then a sudden undeniable craving for a warm, rich dessert hits.

You know you want something comforting. But the thought of pulling out mixing bowls, waiting for an oven to preheat, and cleaning up a mountain of dirty dishes feels completely out of the question.
Why you will Love Mug Cakes:
Mug cakes have taken the baking world by storm, and for good reason. They bridge the gap between instant satisfaction and homemade quality.
Minimal Cleanup: You mix and bake everything inside the exact same mug you eat from! A single mug and a fork or small whisk are almost all the equipment you need. You can choose to take a small mixing bowl to make batter first. As it's sometimes difficult to mix batter in mugs.
Easy to Portion Control: Remember baking a full 9x13 pan of brownies or a layer cake? It’s all too easy to go back for "just one more bite" until half the pan is gone. A mug cake gives you exactly one generous serving—satisfying your craving without leftover temptations.
Customizable: Single-serve baking allows you to tweak flavors effortlessly. Prefer extra chocolate? Want a hint of espresso? You can adapt each mug to suit your exact mood.
Speed: From measuring to the first irresistible bite, entire process only takes under five minutes.
Ingredients you will need:
Basic ingredients like dark chocolate, butter, sugar, flour, cocoa, leaveners, peanut butter and one egg to make this cake.

The Secret to making Best Mug Cake:
Many mug cakes suffer from one major flaw. They can turn out dry or rubbery if over mixed or cooked even a few seconds too long.
The secret weapon in this recipe is how the peanut butter is added. Rather than stirring all of the peanut butter directly into the batter, you dollop a tablespoon right on top of the raw batter.
As the cake rises around it in the microwave, the peanut butter sinks into the center, creating a luscious and creamy core.
When you dig your spoon in, you get a contrast of soft, fluffy chocolate cake and warm, gooey peanut butter.
Kind of Chocolate and Peanut Butter to use:
I have used dark chocolate for this cake. You can use any chocolate of your liking. But make sure it is a good quality chocolate.
Use smooth peanut butter in the batter for best texture of the cake. You can top with any kind of peanut butter that you like.
How this Cake Comes Together:
Melt your Chocolate:
Melt butter and dark chocolate in small increments in microwave and mix using a balloon whisk.
Incorporate Wet Ingredients:
Crack the egg directly into the melted chocolate mixture and pour in the milk. Using a fork or small mini-whisk, beat the mixture vigorously until thoroughly combined and glossy.
Add the Dry Ingredients:
Add sugar, flour, leavener and a pinch of salt to the mug. Beat again with your fork until a smooth and thick batter forms. Make sure to scrape down the sides and bottom edges of the mug so no dry pockets of flour remain.
Create the Peanut Butter center:
Take some peanut butter and float it right in the center on top of batter. Do not stir it in! Leaving it whole allows it to naturally sink down into the middle while cooking. This creates that signature creamy center after the cake bakes.
Microwave, Top and Serve:
Pour all the batter in a microwave safe mug and cook till done. Top with more peanut butter and chocolate chips. Serve warm.
Size of Mug:
Use a large 14 oz mug so that batter gets enough space while the cake is cooking. If you can't seem to find a large mug at your place you can cook it in 2 mugs. Even a bowl works too.
Pro Tips for making no fail Mug Cakes:
Watch the Microwave Wattage: Microwave power varies wildly. Overcooking is the number one cause of rubbery mug cakes. If you aren't sure of your microwave's exact wattage, start checking the cake at the 1-minute 30-second mark. The center should look slightly set but moist.
Use Real Chocolate: Using chopped dark chocolate instead of just cocoa powder yields a significantly richer texture and a glossy, brownie-like consistency.
Choose the Right Mug: Stick to straight-sided ceramic mugs that hold at least 12 to 14 ounces (1½ cups). If your mug is too small, the batter might overflow during its rapid microwave rise.
Don't Overmix the Flour: Once you add the dry ingredients, mix just until combined. Overworking the gluten can make the final cake dense.
Variations you will love:
Want to tweak the recipe to match what’s currently in your pantry? Try these variations:
Nutella / Chocolate Spread Overdose: Not in the mood for peanut butter? Swap peanut butter out for your favorite hazelnut chocolate spread for double the chocolate indulgence.
Cookie Butter Twist: Replace the peanut butter center and topping with Biscoff or cookie butter. Then top with crushed graham crackers.
Salted Caramel Delight: Drop a soft caramel candy or a spoonful of thick salted caramel sauce into the center alongside the peanut butter.
Add Espresso Powder: Add ⅛ teaspoon of instant espresso powder to the melted chocolate mixture to intensify the chocolate flavor profile.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I make this Gluten Free?
Yes! Substitute the all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour blend. Because gluten-free flours absorb liquids slightly differently, ensure your batter isn't overly stiff before cooking; add an extra teaspoon of milk if needed.
Why did my mug cake turned out chewy?
Chewy or rubbery textures usually stem from overcooking or using too much egg for the proportion of dry ingredients. Be sure to measure your flour accurately (spoon and level, don't pack it down). Keep a close eye on the microwave timer.
Can I use chunky peanut butter instead of smooth?
Absolutely! Crunchy peanut butter works wonderfully and adds extra texture inside the gooey core.
