TASTE AND TEXTURE:
- Soft and fluffy
- Lightly sweetened cookie with creamy frosting
- Hint of vanilla that comes perfectly after each bite
SUGAR COOKIE INGREDIENTS:
- butter - You can use salted butter or unsalted butter, up to you. I prefer unsalted butter but that's just my own personal preference.
- sugar - Just a tad bit of sugar creates that addictive sweet taste.
- eggs - Eggs are used as the binding agent for the rest of the ingredients. They also add a bit of moisture since sugar cookies can become dry easily.
- vanilla - Imitation vanilla will work but if you have vanilla extract, that's the best!
- baking powder - It gives this simple sugar cookie recipe the fluffy texture that we all love.
- flour - I typically use an unbleached flour for cookies but any type of white flour will be fine.
Ingredients for the homemade buttercream frosting
- unsalted butter - For the frosting, make sure that you're using unsalted butter.
- powdered sugar - Granulated sugar is what you'll use for the cupcakes. For the frosting, you need to use powdered sugar.
- vanilla - Once again, real vanilla is the best!
- almond extract - Adding in almond extract creates a warmth to the flavor. (It is optional, but it adds a lot of great flavor.)
- heavy whipping cream - Using cream in the frosting adds so much creaminess to the texture!
- salt - Just a pinch, a tiny pinch of salt. If you use salted butter for the frosting, omit this. You can also omit the salt altogether if you don't want to add it to the frosting.
HOW TO MAKE VALENTINE SUGAR COOKIES
To make the heart-shaped sugar cookies:
Preheat the oven. Before starting the cookie-making process, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Mix the butter and sugar. Add the butter and sugar to your mixer and mix. Combine until you get a smooth and creamy texture.
Add the eggs and vanilla. Combine the vanilla and eggs with the mixture and mix well.
Add the dry ingredients. First, add in the baking powder and stir. Then, add the flour, one cup at a time. Do this slowly so it all gets mixed in well with the mixer.
Roll out the dough. You're going to want to roll out the dough in sections, or at least I find that easier to do. Pinch off a section and roll out the dough slightly less about ½ inch in thickness. (you can easily change up the thickness to whatever you prefer, too!)
Cut the cookies into heart shapes. This is the fun part! If you have little ones making these cookies with you, they'll love jumping in and helping.
Bake the cookies. You'll need to pay close attention while the cookies are baking. The cooking time will vary between 6-10 minutes. Thinner cookies will take less time while thicker sugar cookies will take more. The time you need to bake your cookies depends on how thick (or thin) you rolled the dough.
Cool down the cookies. Before applying the frosting, be sure to let the sugar cookies cool down all the way.
To make the buttercream frosting:
Cream the butter. Add the butter to your mixing bowl and mix until the texture is nice and creamy.
Add the rest of the frosting ingredients. Mix in the rest of the ingredients and combine well. Start out on low speed and increase to medium speed to make it fluffy in texture.
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN SUGAR COOKIES ARE DONE BAKING IN THE OVEN?
This can be the tricky part! You do need to pay attention while they're baking because the thickness will vary the time. Visually, there's not a lot to see in terms of knowing when to pull them. Just pay attention to the cooking time and you'll be fine.
HOW DO I STORE LEFTOVER COOKIES?
Since this cookie recipe makes a good amount of cookies, you're going to have some leftovers. Storing the cookies in an airtight container and keeping them in the fridge is key.
CAN I FREEZE SUGAR COOKIES?
You can. Freezing baked sugar cookies is a great way to save them for later. Make sure that they've cooled down all the way and then add them to a freezer-safe container or storage container to save them for later.
I highly recommend that you don't freeze them with frosting as this will change the texture potentially when you unthaw them. Since the frosting is so simple to make, you can whip up a new batch of frosting later and add it to the top of the cookies at that point in time.
QUICK TIPS FOR MAKING SOFT SUGAR COOKIES
- Don't try and frost the cookies too soon. If they're warm at all, the frosting is going to slide right off and cause a mess.
- You can also enjoy these heart sugar cookies without frosting as well. A sprinkling of powdered sugar or a light glaze are also delicious and easy topping ideas.

Instructions
To make the cookies:
- Preheat the oven. Before starting the cookie-making process, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix butter and sugar. Add softened butter and sugar to your mixer and mix. Combine until you get a smooth and creamy texture.
- Add eggs and vanilla. Combine vanilla and eggs with the mixture and mix well.

- Cut the cookies into heart shapes. This is the fun part! If you have little ones making these cookies with you, they'll love jumping in and helping.
- Bake the cookies. Quickly chill the cut cookies in the freezer before baking as the oven preheats. This little step will make thicker cookies, that hold their shape. You'll need to pay close attention while the cookies are baking. Cooking time will vary between 6-10 minutes. Thinner cookies will take less time while thicker sugar cookies will take more. The time you need to bake your cookies depends on how thick (or thin) you rolled the dough.
- Cool down your cookies. Before applying the frosting, be sure to let the sugar cookies cool down all the way.
To make the buttercream frosting:
- Cream the butter. Add butter to your mixing bowl and mix until the texture is nice and creamy.
